Differences I've Found...

A list of the various differences

Spool cans: Three different styles of spool cans (left to right: 1,2 & 3).

Face Plates: Two types of face plates. The smaller thread guide loop is set horizontal, or guide set at a 45* angle and closer to V thread guide.

Cover Plates: Two types; one that is attached and pivots open, one the slides open and off. You can see two differences. The older machine, Eldredge badged H5862, on the left and the newer, National badged H53848, on right. Both plates have the R.K. Hohmann patent info and same patent dates 1911-1913.

Hook Design: I see differences in the hook design associated with the change in spool can design. Left is oldest style (H5862)-uses style #1 spool can, middle (H18934) is a badged Eldredge-uses style #2 spool can, right is the newest (H53848) badged National-uses style #3 spool can. Arrows point to the differences in each.

Spool Winder Arm: Subtle changes in the winder arm. Left is the older style on H5862 & H18934. Right is on the newer H53848-the extra lever assembly functions as a release lever that holds the spool wider up while also holding the rubber motor wheel off the hand wheel when winding a spool (this machine came to me as an electric portable with a motor, which I took off to put it in a treadle cabinet).

Base Leg Position: Style on the right (H5862) has the front left-side leg positioned near the front edge of the base (does not fit into the later style National treadle cabinet) and the other on the right (H18934)style has the front left-side leg back about an 2 inches from the front edge of the base.

Hand Wheel: Original-treadle non-electrified machine head has a heavier and slightly larger wheel (149mm outside wheel diameter, 16mm thick outer wheel ring) than electrified portable machines (145mm outside wheel diameter, 14.5mm thick outer wheel ring).

Badge Decal Name: Eldredge, National, Western Electric or Graybar (a badged Montgomery Wards brand)

Treadle Irons: Some with Eldredge, National SMCO, plain on side of irons.

  1. Hi, there is a National treadle on craigslist. Very plain, matte finish, simple cabinet. How can I tell if it's a 2 spool by looking just the front of the machine? Like do the throat plates all look the same on 2 spools? Thank you, Amie in Tn.

  2. Other than looking for the "Two Spool" on the badge, it can be hard to spot a two spool in a photo. The typical curled decal helps, but there were other National machines that decal. However, if you can see the take-up lever and the spool-winder arm, that would also help. The take-up lever is always on the front edge of the face plate and the spool-winder pin is longer than a typical bobbin would be with a split instead of being a solid pin. The hook area cover plate should have H. R. Hohmann patent info on it too. Too be sure, asking the selling about the spool can is you best bet.

  3. Do you know where I can find a canister for my Eldridge Two Spool sewing machine? Thanks so much.

  4. Unfortunately, this canisters are extremely difficult to find. I don't have any extras myself. They do turn up on eBay occasionally, however. But, you really need to check to be sure a canister you might find is the right one for your style of Two-Spool. You've seen the photos in my other post showing the 3 canisters I have in my machines. The one on the left may be the one you would look for, since your machine is badged as an Eldredge. It all depends on the hook style you have. I'm sure there is a canister out there, but finding it may take a long time. Keep looking!!

  5. I am looking for bobbin #3 on your picture above, just in case you run across any extra.

  7. I am looking at a two spool right now at St Vinny's in Madison and I want I know if it is possible to repair it. Are the prices I would need, like the belt for one even out there? It's beautiful. I am totally attracted to it. Can it be helped? Can it be used? Please help.

  8. Without seeing it, I can’t tell you much. Parts might be hard to find, since there aren’t that many of these machines around. But, most likely it can be helped and certainly used if all the needed parts are there.

  9. You have good articles here! If anyone here looking for loan @ 2% rate in return to buy home or other financing needs, I want you to contact Mr Benjamin On 247officedept@gmail.com Also On Whats-App + 1-989-394-3740When I was introduced to Mr. Benjamin, I was entering the market as a first time buyer. Naturally,my needs were a bit different and I had loads of questions. Before he sent me my pre-approval letter, he called to speak with me about what it meant and what could change. He made himself available to me at pretty much any hour via email and texts. He was very responsive and knowledgeable. He’s also very straightforward. I explained to him what my expectations were in terms of closing time and other particulars. He said he would meet those expectations but he surpassed them. I closed so quickly my realtor and the seller of course were excited about that. But as a buyer I appreciated being walked through the process of Mr Benjamin loan offer. From pre-approval to closing- the journey was so seamless and I consider myself lucky because I’ve heard horror stories. I recommend him to anyone looking for a loan. Everything was handled electronically expediently and securely

  13. Eldredge Two Spool decals,
    Serial # H1446,
    Spool can # 1,
    Pivot plate,
    Hook # 1,
    Hand wheel 149mmx16mm,
Face plate is neither of the two shown here. It has a no "V" thread guide and no spring. It has two off-set loops instead, as well as the lower loop seen on the other versions. The guide at the top of the face plate is elongated and transverse, and is similar in shape to the tensioner on the spool can, though not the same.
Underneath there is no left leg at the front. Instead, the hook mechanism is encircled by a loop in the main body casting and the base of this is flattened to act as a leg.
The treadle plate has no name but the side irons read: "ELDREDGE"
    Hope this helps.
    Regards from New Zealand.
